Soe Naing, a photographer from Myanmar, reportedly dies in detention

Soe Naing was taken into custody on December 10 after taking pictures of protests against Myanmar's military government in Yangon.

The military informed Soe Naing's family yesterday that he had died in custody, according to anonymous friends, colleagues, and family members of the photographer. The death report for the journalist, who was in his 30s, did not mention the cause of death.

After his arrest, the journalist was sent to a military interrogation center in Yangon's Eastern Botahtaung Township, and yesterday his family learned that he had died at the Yangon Defense Service General Hospital. According to the report, his remains were cremated that same day.

A number of foreign news agencies had sometimes published Soe Naing's coverage of protests and security forces' crackdowns in the months following the coup, according to The Associated Press and The Irrawaddy.

Myanmar is the second-worst jailer of journalists in the world, with at least 26 people imprisoned for their work.

The death of Soe Naing would mark the first death of a journalist in detention since the military took over on February 1.
