Jawed Yusufi, an Afghan journalist, beaten, stabbed in Kabul
Yusufi, a reporter for the independent online news source Ufuq News Agency, was attacked while on his way home in Kabul, the capital, last night by four unidentified men.
As Yusufi was attempting to flee, the men repeatedly punched, kicked, and stabbed him several times in the back before fleeing. His injuries were not treated at two local hospitals, so he was taken to a third hospital, Kabul's Ibne Sina Hospital, where he underwent an operation for about three hours this morning.
The men did not take anything from Yusufi, and one of the attackers called him "the foolish journalist" during the attack.
A Taliban agent from Police District 13 met Yusufi at the first hospital where he was taken and asked if he was okay. According to news reports, Taliban authorities today blamed the attack on "armed thieves."
According to news reports, Yusufi was beaten and punched by unidentified armed men in Kabul on November 5, 2014, while he was working at the Arezo TV station. Afterwards, people threatened to torture and kill him, the journalist said. In 2014, Yusufi said he lived mostly in hiding and briefly stopped working as a journalist.
Yusufi worked for Ufuq News Agency from a hidden location after the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15, 2021. Recently, he has been writing about education, crime, and the potential for women's resistance under the Taliban.
Ufuq News Agency is an independent online news source that covers political, security, and economic issues in Afghanistan.
