An American journalist is sentenced to 11 years in prison in Myanmar
American journalist Danny Fenster was sentenced to 11 years in prison today by the Myanmar court on charges that included incitement, unlawful association, and visa violations, according to news reports.
Press and public were barred from attending the trial at Myanmar's Insein Prison, where Fenster is being held. His lawyer, Than Zaw Aung, told AP that Fenster was sentenced to the maximum term of each charge.
Fenster, the managing editor of Frontier Myanmar, is being held at Yangon's Insein Prison since he was arrested at Yangon's international airport on May 24, while attempting to reach his home in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States.
In addition, Fenster faces charges of terrorism and sedition, which carry prison sentences up to 10 years and 20 years, respectively. His trial on those charges begins on November 16, according to reports.
"Everyone at Frontier is disappointed and frustrated at this decision. We just want to see Danny released as soon as possible so he can go home to his family," said Thomas Keen, Frontier's Editor-in-Chief.
