Brazilian journalist attacked at the entrance of Adesso TV's office
On January 14, an unknown man punched and kicked Daniel Carniel several times in the face and body at the entrance of privately-owned broadcaster Adesso TV in Garibaldi, in the coastal state of Rio Grande do Sul.
As Carniel walked to the Adesso TV building, an unidentified man met him at the door. A man followed Carniel into the building, asked what his name was, and then punched him when Carniel identified himself.
After punching Carniel several times, the man threw him to the ground, where he continued to punch the journalist and then kicked him. The video footage from the street security camera shows a man waiting outside the offices; the man then follows Carniel inside and leaves. Following that, Carniel exited the building covered in blood.
Following the attack, Carniel called the Rio Grande do Sul state Military Brigade, which responded shortly and reported the incident. Afterward, he broadcast his program and reported the assault to his audience, then went to a local hospital.
According to CPJ, during the attack, Cabrelle stated that the attacker said, "This is so you learn not to denounce things, say bad things about others, or lie on television." It is unclear what particular report prompted the attack.
Carniel is a journalist and the founder and host of the online news portal Portal Adesso and cable news channel Adesso TV, where he presents a daily news show called Prato Limpo ("Clean Dish"), which focuses on local news, politics, and corruption. The program is also broadcast on YouTube.
During another program, which aired on January 17, he announced that the show would be his last broadcast until he had recovered from the attack.
