Armed men attack Ghanaian radio station Ada FM
A group of masked men attacked and threatened the staff of the privately-owned broadcaster in the Ada district of greater Accra on January 13.
One of the attackers, who carried a pistol, kicked and hit Radio Ada presenter Korle Adjaotor Sorngortse for more than 10 minutes, shoved receptionist Ruby Ate and held her down, and forced producer and anchor Gideon Amanor Dzeagu to kneel as they ransacked the office.
Approximately 15 minutes later, the men left the scene and allegedly threatened to shoot people if Radio Ada FM continued reporting on the mining contract awarded to Electrochem.
The police have begun an investigation into the attack.
A nearby bar was used by the attackers to monitor the broadcaster for over three hours before they entered the office, according to reports.
The outlet reported that some people would have to relocate as a result of the Electrochem contract, and a protest had been planned.
This protest was set to take place on the same day that the broadcaster was attacked. Organizers were unable to obtain police protection, leading to the cancellation of the protest.
Ghanaian journalists have long complained about impunity for those responsible for violence against them.
