AFPC-USA Meets with Pavel Butorin, Advocate and Husband of Imprisoned Journalist Alsu Kurmasheva
Ahead of the 2024 Press Freedom Forum in Washington, D.C., AFPC-USA Chairwoman Nancy Prager-Kamel, Vice President Bob Rowley, and Alex Raufoglu, a member of the Board of Directors for the AFPC-USA Club, met with Pavel Butorin, the husband of Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva.
Kurmasheva. who has worked with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Tatar-Bashkir Service for more than two decades, was detained by Russian authorities last October on charges that she'd failed to register as a foreign agent. Last month, the Russian state news agency TASS reported that Kurmasheva will now be detained until June 5. AFPC-USA has previously called on the Biden administration and members of Congress to take all measures possible to obtain her release, including having her designated by the U.S. Department of State as “wrongfully detained,” which will allow more intensive efforts to free her.
